Geothermal Power Plant
The United States has over 70 geothermal power plants in 7 different states, primarily California and New Mexico. The other states are Hawaii, Nevada, Alaska, Idaho and Utah.
Worldwide, dozens of countries have opened geothermal power plants.
A geothermal power plant operates differently than the ground source heat pumps used in homes. Power plants are used in areas where the crust is thin enough for wells to tap into underground heat sources. These wells use steam or hot water to drive the turbines which generate the plant’s electricity. These plants have almost zero emissions, and are not susceptible to fluctuating costs like oil, coal or natural gas.
