Geothermal Cost

The general rule of thumb is that a geothermal system costs $2500 per ton of capacity.  An average sized home requires a three ton unit, for a cost of around $7500 dollars.  As more companies offer both parts and services for geothermal systems, competition has been driving the price down in many regions of the United States.  If you ask your contractor for a rough quote of cost per ton for a geothermal system, don’t be alarmed if you are cited a figure of twice or more the $2500 average.  They are likely including the cost of drilling in the quote.

Most of the installation cost comes from drilling and placing the loops.  Prices for this vary widely, depending on factors such as soil conditions, labor costs in your region, and which type of system you are having installed.  A general range for this part of the installation is between $10,000 and $25,000.
